Feb 25th Meeting Notes

We had a much lower turn-out at last week's Parents' Association meeting - but we have big plans for the remainder of the school year - so please look for upcoming email announcements and events! For those of you who were unable to attend the last meeting, feel free to read the notes below. We hope to see you at the next meeting!

NEXT MEETINGS
Tues, March 10, 8:30-9:30pm Auction Planning Committee Meeting
where: co-chair Jacco Kroon's house (RSVP with the DNPA if you'd like to attend)
Interested in helping plan DNPA's biggest fundraising event of the year? At this meeting, the committee will decide the shape/form of the Auction Fundraiser and then break down tasks into subcommittees (e.g. auction item solicitation, event planning (food, decorations, music, etc.), graphics/printing).

Wed, March 18, 5:30-7:00pm - General DNPA Meeting
where: Duck's Nest (dinner and childcare provided - sign-up sheet forthcoming)
Among other agenda items, the Auction Planning Committee will provide an update and may look for more volunteers to help on subcommittees.

NOTES FROM FEB 25TH MEETING

ENRICHMENT:

• Vivarium is coming Wed, 2/25 (today!). Lawrence Hall of Science's 6-week program is scheduled for April/May. The Enrichment Committee and the school administration will work together to select one more school-wide performance/event to round out the enrichment program for this year.

• The Enrichment Committee has developed a rubric to help assess/filter enrichment programming, which they will share with the DN community, both parents and administration. The DNPA will also provide parents with some context/background on enrichment at Duck's Nest (some of which is funded by the school and some by the Parents' Association).

• The DNPA's proposed budget also included some support for classroom field trips. This may need re-evaluation as only 1 trip has been funded so far this year. The administration will talk with teachers about field trips, to see if there are better ways the funds could be used to enhance the children's experience.

BUDGET:

This year's proposed budget breaks down as follows:
36% - Teacher/Staff Appreciation (monetary gifts for birthdays, holidays, end-of-year)
32% - Enrichment Programs (e.g. Lawrence Hall of Science)
21% - Overhead (insurance, food/childcare for 3 mandated meetings)
11% - Community-Building Events (Fall Festival, Kindergarten Info Night, etc.)
• DNPA to revisit these percentages moving forward, to be sure that they are consistent with parents' priorities (DNPA plans to send out a survey for parents regarding priorities in the near future).

• Can we lower our overhead? Options to lower the organization's insurance: transferring the liability portion to the school (?) or getting one-time only liability insurance for special off-site events (e.g. auction)? DNPA will discuss with the school administration. Insurance was "shopped" last year and is about 1/2 the cost of what it was in years past.

FUNDRAISING: Rally the troops! Tentative auction date: Sat, June 6th!

• Jacco Kroon (Mandarin and Woodduck dad) and Matt Gousman (Mandarin dad) volunteered to co-chair this year's auction committee. Committee kick-off meeting will be next week with those folks who signed up at the last meeting (meeting date TBD).

• More volunteers will be needed to help in the near future. Everything from auction item solicitation to day-of set up and clean up.

• It will likely be a low-key affair, possibly at the school, with ticket prices kept as low as possible.

Other fundraising:

Amazon Program: There is some confusion about how to use it properly. DNPA will send out another reminder about the program and provide clarification on how to use the link.

• Veggie/Fruit Box Program: DNPA may do a trial fundraiser with a CSA farm using the school as the pick up location for seasonal fruit boxes. Sign-ups would likely begin in the summer, and deliveries starting in Sept.

• Family Movie Nights at DN: Using projector and screen at the school, possible fundraiser selling tickets and/or popcorn or pizza. Stay tuned!

• Better Messaging/Marketing: DNPA will work to improve messaging and more targeted fundraising marketing efforts.
